Dear ___________ MP (or Senator _________)
My name is _________ and I am a South Australian resident concerned about the grim trajectory of our state’s biodiversity conservation, or rather lack thereof. It has recently been brought to my attention that the large-scale bushfire in Cherry Gardens and surrounding areas earlier this year was particularly devastating for endemic wildlife.
Such natural disasters are increasing in their frequency and intensity due to climate change. While South Australia has made great progress in its investment in renewable energies and climate adaptation strategy, there is an ongoing need for funding wildlife recovery projects as we strive to mitigate the consequences of our increasingly dry and unbearably hot summers.
While much of the media and government attention concerning this tragedy focused on the people it directly affected, it is imperative for the South Australian community to likewise consider the non-human lives lost and habitats destroyed. Fortunately, the Friends of the Scott Creek Conservation Park and supporters have initiated a recovery plan for the region; however, their resources are limited and they require additional support. I am therefore requesting that, in your capacity as my local MP/Senator, you raise the devastating impact of this disaster on local biodiversity with the South Australian Government in order to encourage the introduction of policies that can aid the recovery efforts spearheaded by such not-for-profit organisations.
Thank you very much for considering this call for action and for representing the interests of our community. South Australia’s biodiversity is iconic and unique; it deserves protection and support (financial and otherwise) to ensure the survival of our endemic species well into the future. Should you wish to speak to me further about my concerns, you can contact me on ___________________.
